Alumni Play for the Brockville Tikis

Aeros Even Series
February 17th, 2010

The Brockville Tikis gave the Athens Aeros a wakeup call in Game One.

The Aeros returned the favour in Game Two.

The Aeros jumped on the Tikis for four goals in the first period en route to a convincing 8-3 drubbing in Rideau-St. Lawrence Junior B Hockey League playoff action on Wednesday night at the Memorial Centre.

The game was effectively over in the first period after the Aeros jumped off to a 4-0 lead.

After that, it was just a matter of what the final score would be and when the zaniness would start.

Both teams got caught up in the emotion and lost discipline after the midway point of the second period, turning a hockey game into a long, drawn-out parade to the penalty box.

The players and coaches on both benches were yelling at each other.

It was just like an old-time Aeros-Tikis rivalry.

Both teams were screaming at referee Sean Ball.

Ball had his hands full once that started. The Tikis ended up taking 116 minutes in penalties while the Aeros were good for 89 minutes.

"I don't like to send messages to players. They knew what was at stake," said Aeros head coach Ted Dancy.

The Aeros couldn't afford to fall behind 2-0 in the series. They came out fast, blitzing a Tikis team that wasn't ready for that.

"It was a bad start and it just snowballed from there," said Tikis head coach Adam Folco. "We just weren't ready to play. It was that simple."

Aeros' Nick Douvris opened the scoring at the 40-second mark and Daniel Lacroix made it 2-0 less than four minutes later.

Former Tiki Dan Weir increased the lead to 3-0 and Pat Cameron finished the scoring in the first period.

"We needed that game. It was good to get off to that start and turn some momentum on our side," said Dancy.

Once the Aeros started freewheeling up the ice, the Tikis had to gamble and take chances to get back in the game.

Aeros' Josh Welch scored on a powerplay at the 3:02 mark of the second period and Scott Baxter blew a shot past Brockville goaltender Ryan Bishop just 19 seconds later.

"We haven't had that much luck against Bishop in the past. Just like any goaltender, once you get some quick ones, you can get him off his game," said Dancy. "We got the upper hand tonight."

With a 6-0 lead, the game turned from hockey to more emotional issues.

Aeros' Justin Brundige was called for a five-minute major kneeing penalty on Tikis' Alex Bouchey.

After that, both teams began headhunting and hockey wasn't the primary concern.

The Aeros led 7-1 at the end of the second period.

"We opened it up and then we started making mistakes and lost our composure, all the things you can't do to win hockey games," said Folco.

The third period seemed to take forever to play. It included a wrestling and punching dustup involving everyone on the ice at the six-minute mark.

It even included Aeros' goalie Randy Yee, who ended up getting the heave-ho for fighting and defending himself.

Linesmen Matt Ferguson and Murray Ley would separate one set of players and another fight would break out.

Weir led the Aeros in points and with two goals and two assists and kept up a steady stream of chirping from a distance.

Kyle Drisdelle had the lone Aeros' goal in the third period.

James Hurley, Tom Collins and Robert Rice scored for the Tikis.

The Aeros were worried about attracting a crowd to game three on Sunday night in Athens at 7:30 p.m. but that shouldn't be a problem now.

Game four will be in Brockville on Wednesday, February 24 at 7:45 p.m.
