Tikis Rebound after Lose to Wolves with Win Over Rebels
January 17th, 2010

After losing 6-4 to the Akwesasne Wolves on Saturday night, the Tikis bounced back with a well-deserved 4-2 victory over the Char-Lan Rebels on Sunday afternoon at the Memorial Centre.

In the final interlocking game of the season for Brockville in the Rideau-St. Lawrence Junior B Hockey League, the Tikis started slowly against the Rebels before picking up the pace.

The Tikis are solidly entrenched in third place, 10 points behind the Athens Aeros and 11 points ahead of the Gananoque Islanders with just a handful of games remaining.

Now, for the Tikis, the focus is not so much about wins, but being prepared for the playoffs.

"It was nice to bounce back," said Tikis head coach Adam Folco, of the win after the loss to an Akwesasne team that had only 2 wins on the entire season.

"We started out a little slow in the first period (against Char- Lan), but the effort was much better in the second and third periods. That was our concern,"

The Tikis were playing without top scorer Shane Melcher, sidelined with stomach issues. The Tikis showed much more spark in the final 40 minutes against the Rebels.

"You're not going to beat anybody in this league if you don't outwork them," said Folco.

After Char-Lan took a 1-0 lead after the first period, the Tikis scored 2 goals in under a minute in the 2nd period to take the lead. Hustle by Ethan Robert allowed the Tikis to tie the game on a powerplay.

Robert hustled for a loose puck along the boards and sent a pass to Robbie Thomson for a shot into the top corner past Rebels' goaltender Angus MacDougall.

The Tikis scored again with the man advantage, with Alex Bouchey knocking in a puck out of a scramble in front of the net.

The Tikis could have been ahead by more, but Brockville's Cody Johnson hit a post and a crossbar. MacDougall also made big saves on James Hurley, Jordan Moran and Thomson on his doorstep.

The Tikis did increase that lead to 3-1 at the 1:24 mark of the third period.

Despite being hooked, Brett Jackson drove to the net, fanned on his first shot and hit enough of his second attempt to send it under MacDougall.

MacDougall returned to form when he stopped Tikis' Doug Utting on a cut to the net.

At 16:13 of the third period, the Tikis made it 4- 1 on a goal by Eric Malloy with the setup work done by Hurley.

Derek Villeneuve did score for Char-Lan with three minutes left on an otherwise solid Ryan Bishop in the Brockville net.

Troy Gove had the first goal for Char-Lan.

"It's down to that time when it's all about preparing for the playoffs," said Folco. "We've clinched a spot in the playoffs. Our goal is to keep getting better, build momentum going into the playoffs, taking it that one notch higher for the playoffs."

The Tikis outshot the Rebels 32-28.

In Akwesasne on Saturday, the Tikis led 2-1 after the first period with the Wolves owning a 4-2 advantage at the end of 40 minutes.

Robert Rice had two goals for the Tikis, while Melcher and Jeremy Nicholls had the other goals.

Keith Sloan and Dillan Barr had two goals each for Akwesasne, outshot by Brockville 44-34.

Brockville returns to action on Wednesday night in hosting the South Grenville Rangers at 7:45 at the Memorial Centre.
